About the winning project

Caprice des Dieux | A study was conducted by the Canton of Basel-City for the rebuilding and design of Vogesenplatz including the VoltaCenter. The project by Buchner Bründler Architekten AG, Basel was chosen for realisation as the competition winner. We quote from the assessment committee’s report: «The project confidently expresses its ambition: A strong, multi-shaped building structure with great autonomy and drawing power marks the site, makes a statement and endeavours to establish an identity. The building structure responds to the urban context in different ways: with several oblique-cut sections to Bahnhofsplatz, opening like a fan to Voltastrasse, a compact area along Luzernerring. Two narrow light wells are cut into this building structure as free geometric forms.»

Interior access

Flexibility | Five access cores (with stairwells and lifts) as well as an escalator from the ground floor to the 1st floor ensure easy access to all parts of the building. Great flexibility in use over all floors is an important feature of the building concept.

Individuality | Floor plans with oblique corners are a unique feature of the architecture. This results in rooms and floor plan types with great individuality.

Light factors | The two large inner courtyards bring a great deal of daylight into the building cube: for the rental apartments on the 2nd – 7th floors, this means brightness and visual expanse.
